The purpose of weight lifting is to increase muscle mass in one's body, and to increase athletic performance. This can include trying to become less injury prone when you perform athletics. The best way to make sure you do not get injured and hurt yourself severely is by lifting weights to increase bone and muscle strength. Lifting weights allows athletes who train in a specific sport to help themselves increase their performance in their sport. Their are certain lifts for each part of the body, and each part of the body helps in certain activities that correlate to the sport. Weight lifting also helps with the mental aspect of sport, which is considered to be 50% of the "battle." Weight lifting also allows for the body to come into the best shape it can possibly be. The more muscle a body has, the more pain it can sustain and help increase performance. The two main revenue producing sports in college athletics, football and basketball, both require tireless dedication in different ways to their respective sport. On the next page I will show a comparison of what a football player workout routine would be, and a basketball players would be.
