On October 14th, I did a short interview with pharmacist/trainer Theo Karavakiros on the subject of weight lifting and the many different aspects of weight lifting. Here are 5 key questions i asked him
Me: How does weight lifting help get athletes into better shape?
Theo: The more muscle a human body has, the more the body uses its metabolism and burns off calories at a faster rate so that it can be the best shaped as possible. So the more you lift, the stronger you get and the more fat you start to burn off.
Me: How important is nutrition in the process of weight lifting?
Theo: It is the single most important thing that can determine whether or not significant gains are made through a lifting program. With the proper nutrition it is very possible to see significant gains in as little as 2 weeks, but without the proper nutrition, it can hinder an athletes gains from lifting
Me: About how much protein does the body need a day for a lifter looking to improve his strength?
Theo: The body needs approximately the same amount of grams as body weight that you have. For example, if you weigh 155 lbs, you would need about 155 grams of protein in your body that day.
Me: What is the hardest thing for new people trying to become weight lifters?
Theo: Those who struggle finding motivation to push yourself everyday. In order to see results in weight lifting, you must push yourself past your limits for many months, because weight lifting results are not seen immediately, it comes through time.
Me: What is the key thing for lifters to protect themselves from injury?
Theo: The key to not getting hurt is keeping form and making sure to use weight that you know you can do. It's good to push yourself in the gym, but you need to be realistic and put a weight on that you know you can get without hurting yourself.
